Por que Amazônia?
The Amazon contains the greatest biodiversity on the planet and one of the world's largest reservoirs of freshwater. The forest itself covers half of Brazil's territory. Brazil's Legal Amazon (Amazônia Legal) contains nine Brazilian states and 23 million people, including the majority of the country's indigenous population with more than 180 tribes, more than 1,000 quilombola communities and numerous riverside communities.

The Amazon is currently one of the most affected and at-risk regions in Brazil to the pandemic. To begin, Brazil's north region has the worst hospital infrastructure ranking in the country. Now with attention turned to the pandemic, illegal logging and mining activity have intensified, putting the indigenous population at increased risk. The pandemic's threats are amplified even more as this population lacks access to information, public infrastructure and quality medical services, compounded by their weak immunity to viruses and the difficulties posed by the region's remoteness.
How will your support help?
BrazilFoundation and Conservation International (CI-Brasil) are joining forces in a global movement to mobilize resources and offer humanitarian support to the traditional dwellers of the Brazilian Amazon.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought Brazil's profound social inequalities into bold relief. Because of its vast territory navigable only by river, the Amazon people are extremely vulnerable and cannot access even basic health services. But, there is a lot that we can do!

Your donation will reach thousands of vulnerable families and, in the long-term, support traditional Amazon dwellers to protect biodiversity, local food supply and livelihoods. The campaign is already off to a strong start, thanks to a generous donation of US$ 20,000 from BTG-Pactual.

Amazonia Sempre funds will support socio-environmental organizations to coordinate with indigenous, quilombola and riverside communities to combat the immediate effects of COVID-19 and to boost socioeconomic development in tandem with nature conservancy. BF will donate half the funds raised to four partner organizations, chosen for the respect they have earned in their territories: Associação Kanindé, Porto Velho (RO); Coletivo de Mulheres Indígenas Suraras do Tapajós, Santarém (PA); Zagaia Amazônia, Manaus (AM); Expedicionários da Saúde, região amazônica. CI-Brasil will direct the other half to indigenous associations in their regional network through COIAB and Kayapó people associations.
